Brunswick County has had ballet companies for years. The first opera company in Brunswick County was organized a few years ago to present “Amahl and the Night Visitors.” Now singers and dancers have joined hands to form the Ballet Opera Alliance.

The alliance will allow each of the two member groups to hold performances together or have separate performances. BOA is a member organization of the Brunswick Arts Council.
“In today’s economy people are looking for entertainment,” said Erinn Pittenger Hughes, president of BOA. “The area is ready to support opera. Everybody is ready for dance performances.”
BOA will present “Amahl and the Night Visitors” again this year. Pat Pittenger first brought this opera, which was written especially for children by Gian Carlo Menotti, to Brunswick County in 2006.

Pittenger served as the choreographer for the Prince George’s Civic Opera in Maryland and staged the show annually for many years. From 2006 through 2008 “Amahl and the Night Visitors” was presented at St. Philip’s Episcopal Church in Southport, St. James the Fisherman Episcopal Church in Shallotte and Virginia Williamson Event Center at Brunswick Community College in Supply.

On Dec. 4,  BOA will feature “Amahl and the Night Visitors” at its premiere performance, “An Evening with Ballet Opera Alliance,” which will also include “Les Patineurs,” a ballet about an ice-skating romance.

Dance auditions for the upcoming presentation will be Sept. 25 at Inspirations Dance Centre, 8109 River Road SE in Southport. Auditions are scheduled for dancers ages 7-10 at 10:30 a.m. and dancers age 11 and up are scheduled for 11:30 a.m. For more information, call (910) 612-7441.
Vocal auditions will be 5 to 7 p.m. Sept. 27 at Oak Island Presbyterian Church, 1503 E. Oak Island Drive in Oak Island. For more information, call (252) 412-0028.
“We’d really like to find an 8- to 10-year-old boy with a soprano voice to play the part of Amahl,” Hughes said.

BOA also plans a fund-raiser that will be an evening of song, dance, food and wine. BOA will present “An Evening at Maxim’s” 5-6:30 p.m. Sept. 26 at the Southport Community Building on E. Moore St.
Advanced reservations are $25 per person or $40 per couple. Admission at the door is $30 per person or $50 per couple. Call Inspirations Dance Centre at (910) 612-7441 to make reservations.
